Colonial Diplomacy Rule - The Suez Canal

I have a question for anyone who knows about the Suez Canal rule in 
Colonial Diplomacy.

Here's the rule:

"The Suez Canal allows fleets to move directly from the Mediterranean 
to the Red Sea, without first passing through Egypt. This is only 
possible if allowed by a unit standing in Egypt"

Here's the question:

If a fleet can move directly from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea 
through the Canal, wouldn't it follow that a unit could SUPPORT 
another unit through the Canal?

According to the 2000 rules, 4th Edition of Diplomacy:

"The province to which a unit is providing support must be one to 
which the supporting unit could have legally moved during that 
turn."  I think this rule supports the argument.  Also:

"A fleet that can move to a province with two separate coasts can 
support another army or fleet into that province without regard to 
separate coastlines."  This rule, although not exactly what we're 
talking about, does support the same LOGIC argument for why the 
support would work.  Logically, it doesn't matter how the unit gets 
to the province, if he can get to it, he can support another unit to 
it.

Although the word support is not mentioned in the Suez Canal rule, 
the support follows all the logical arguments that allow the fleet to 
move, therefore I would argue there's no rule that PREVENTS the 
support from working.  And therefore, it should work.
