Perhaps. I'm thinking an infusion or refocus is what Cat23 needs. 
All of Ray Setzers old links to Cat 23 merely go into his site under the
"movie making" theme and have nothing to do with Diplomacy...much less point
you back here to the Yahoo Groups.
 
I would even venture to say that most of the work Ray used to do is what
kept Cat23 afloat. Without him at the helm, we need a few things to occur;
 
1. A new website. One that talks about what/who we are, complete with links
to the YahooGroups and what each are used for.
Comprehensive and simple in design, but pleasing to novice and ole Cat23'er
veterans alike.
With a definite emphasis on Diplomacy. See point two.
 
2. A renaming. I've been thinking "Diplomacy On Cat23" or "Diplomacy Games
As Played On Cat23" or "Diplomacy Gaming At The Cat23 Group". Again,
something explanatory but simple. Less emphasis on the Cat23 part and more
on Diplomacy Gaming.
 
3. Maintain the early vision and focus of Cat23. When I first stepped into
Cat23 (no I didn't try to scrape it off my boot), I was releived to find a
place I could start email gaming among novices and experienced players. This
was the first place I got the courage to GM (via email forum), and it will
always hold a special place in my heart from the numerous relationships
(both friendly and otherwise) that came to develop.
It was a community. With a heart and pulse all its own. It's going to take
work, to bring that pulse back into a firm beat again.
I still maintain, that even with its myriad problems, an open forum is more
of a fun way to play Diplomacy as opposed to an elite
group bent on "clean play" itself. If a place has a defining or strong sense
of community (online or otherwise), I'm inclined to believe that new blood
is less likely to
ignore any defining rules.
 
4. How to again bring new blood into the Cat? This is a tough one. Renaming
and  webpage a good start. Anyone else have any advertising ideas?
 
That being said, I'm willing to host a webpage now more than ever. The
History Pages are already on my account at Comcast and now I have even more
webspace then before. As previously stated, I was already kicking the ideas
around in my head. I'll start work on one soon.
 
It's time to grow up I think. Papa Ray has cut the apron strings...

Hi folks. After three appeals, we now have only four players and two
observers, so I think we'll have to cancel the Crowded game unless any of
those already signed up is any good at drumming up interest on one of the
other diplomacy communities. Alternatively there's always Escalation, which
can take any number.

Seems like the death knell for cat23, if you ask me.
