Some of you mentioned a willingness to play Sengoku again...after incorporating advice from this game's commentary and from Dip1096 Sengoku, the new map is ready, and working updated Realpolitik files are available on the site www.geocities.com/nairenvorbeck/files (the RP files are in SengokuJidai2.zip) along with a slew of other interesting reading material (opening strategy commentary, historical info, etc. etc.) and my other variant, South American Supremacy. I would GM myself if my job allowed the time for it, but sadly, it doesn't. Any GMs willing to carry the torch? This game would be part playtest, as I'm always working on Sengoku, but really I think the new changes (most notable lowering the victory requirement to 12 SCs, plus significant revision of the sea zones, and Uesugi and Oda starting environment) make the game very balanced. Interested GMs/Players, please email me at [email protected] Thanks! B. Lee Taylor <[email protected]> wrote: Sengoku... first off, thanks to B for creating the game. and thanks to Michael for GMing the game. the hardest working GM out there. I wanted a corner postion (who doesn't) but ended up in the middle of the pack. I contacted all the players to see how they saw things... Jim/Uesagi were keen for an alliance and indicated that he would go at Trent/Hojo. Darren/Oda was up for and offered to help me into an armed neutral on first year. Mike/Mori liked a no agression pact dmz thing so we could both focus in our areas....Felix/Takeda...... what planet was he on????? he did not who was who or what colour was what... I thought that a short game was on the horizon for him.. :-) so I opened neutrally. and declined the instant stab on Oda in fall 01 that could have given me a boost in the centre. I then looked for where I would be going... Takeda seemed the obvious as both Uesagi and Hojo looked like going at him. Oda was heading to the south west. Takeda got into trouble. SAD was still open and with no Uesagi move to go there I thought it was open for the taking as well. unfortunately Uesagi made peace with Hojo, probably because he feared I would carry on into him, and did not carry around the other side of the island. that caused me a rethink... in the west Mori and Jessie/Shimazu had combined to take on Mikael/Chosokabe and would then be free to come sweeping east. a Uesagi/Hojo alliance could sweep the board westwards from a safe edge. Uesagi not fighting Hojo meant that we would be fighting me... I started forming a centre alliance between Oda/Takeda and myself. Takeda was almost out but I guaranteed him a finish and promised Oda that as we went on to win the game that I would bring his SC total up to level with mine for joint top. the stab on me came when Mori came at me while I pushed at Uesagi. fortunately for me Hojo may have passed on self fulfilling infomation to Uesagi that led to me taking 3 SCs on the turn and being able to counter build the Mori stab. Shimazu turned down the perfect stab on Mori which would have seen him topping the board instead of me and all attempts to get them to break their alliance fell on deaf ears... both the easterners and the westerners showed no signs of breaking their alliances. they had the better position and better numbers. that made it all the more important that we in the centre held firm and try to knock out one side before they could combine against us. we had to take out the east before the westerners closed in on us. our alliance kept going with promises of SC swaps and supports. I started to pull away from Oda on SCs as myself and Takeda finished off the eastern alliance.. Oda was slowly being pushed back in the south and centre but I broke fleets past Mori in the north and established a stalemate line that could not be pentrated as long as Oda was onside. at this stage the game was won for our centre alliance and it would only be a matter of time before we would overpower the westerners. with the end in sight, if a long way off, Oda decided that he would turn against me. the tone of his mails changed and it became clear from a preliminary move he made that he was about to turn on me. I worked on Takeda to keep him on my side and showed him the moves that would mean that he would still finish on the winning side if he stuck by me. the Oda stab came but I countered it and moved more forces into the area. both the north seas and the south seas were effectively stalemate lines that could not be penetrated by the westerners bigger fleet numbers while in the centre I had more armies than the other 4 enemies had combined. one more turn put my armies within guaranteed Oda takes that would put Takeda and myself over the 50% mark and with better postion to take a bundle of landlocked SCs that the westerners could not help Oda with. this is the stage where the game was called. I was aiming for top SC count and hoping that the GM would pick me as winner. the solo offer came out of the blue as I saw a long road ahead and doubt I would get 25 because of the lack of sea provinces to manouver around. thanks all for the game. First I started in the game not really having played this variant...with the beginning colors all goofy I couldn't tell who i was and where i was or what abbr i should use...I remember i was also on vacation and had no net access which made looking at the map all the more harrowing....at one point i thought lee was oda and darren was askaura... it wasn't until i was approached by both that i new i had a shot to stay alive...i believe I was attacking trent or was that darren or was that mori? or maybe mikael? who knew...i lost interest partially because i couldn't open my maps and partly because i was in way way too many games at the time....eventually i lost most of my ground and units but luckily i managed to beg for survival points from darren and lee....eventually being their lap dog for pretty much the duration of the game....until about 1-2 years before the win to Lee is when i started to leek information to lee about the effort that darren was proposing...partially to get lee to trust me so that i can leek it back to darren and eventually push myself more into the position where both darren and lee couldn't afford to kill me off....alas lee maneuvered me out of position and darren made some miscalculations... well it was a great game for me towards the end....and thanks to darren for being so supportive even until the end when all my 'misorders' began to spell disaster for me.... Thanks Vegas for a well run game! F On Jun 29, 2006, at 2:32 PM, Darren Sharma wrote: Gents, Thanks very much for the game, especially to you Michael. The shape of the game was from my point of view simple. On this liner map, we started off with three alliances, left (Shimazu/Mori), right (Uesegi/Hojo) and middle. Due to its linearity, once things divide this way, the middle alliance has to get squeezed. This was a time of gloomy messages exchanged between me and Lee of Asakura, my ally from the start until almost the end. Lee had the idea of bringing in a couple of smaller powers, Chosokabe and Takeda. Their units, along with the maps many stalemate lines, allowed us to hold the western enemies while advancing on the eastern ones. Thanks to Mikael of Chosokabe for being a steadfast ally even when the game couldnt hold much interest for him. Felix you followed a glorious dance between, switching sides many times. As a power broker, you played that very well, always knowing everyone needed you so would forgive. So, I spend the middle portion of the game engaging Shimazu, who pulled off many more clever tactical moves than I was able to predict. This engagement stopped me growing while Lee of Asakura took off; at least it was one factor, the other being dodgy play on my part! This is perhaps where the game would have ended but we were told that there could be only one Shogun. So, I made a stab at a stab. I organised everyone against Lee. Either it was too late, or we just werent good enough at co-ordinating. In any case, we soon had to cede the game to a worthy victor in Asakura. Regarding the map, I think it needs to be less linear, otherwise stalemates will get set up. One idea is to have more sea spaces, and perhaps more island SCs (though less like awj!). Another might be to have more land area in the western half of the map. Anyway, great game, interesting map and scenario.
