I promised that I would make any plugs for the game, but a major thing happened. Mike B. pointed out to me that the holidays were coming up and penalizing people for taking absences was going to be a deterrent. So, we negotiated and think that 10 free days of absence is acceptable. So, I had to make a small change or two just because people weren't signing up as fast I'd like. The initial round is now public and there are now 10 free days of absence. Thank you for pointing that out to me, Mike. Games are as follow: races09_1a races09_1b races09_1c races09_1d races09_1e races09_1f races09_1g races09_1h races09_1i races09_1j races09_1k races09_1l races09_1m races09_1n -- Sam W: 425.228.3440 x.3363 P: 206.469.1305 F: 425.656.5558 -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Sam Tyler Sent: Monday, July 27, 2009 9:55 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [dpjudge] Discussion on scoring systems ... Two years ago, I participated in a discussion on the merits of scoring systems. I had a vision for a system that would focus on enjoyable play and not so much on results. Well, now it's time to see if it works. I've started a tournament called RACES 2009, named after the scoring system. Shoot me a message to dipsamt at gmail if you're interested. That last statement was the only direct plug I'm going to make. I'd like to discuss what you guys think of the format of the tourney and the scoring system itself. I'll be the first to admit - it's complicated, but I'll make an article of the results. I plan on sending frequent updates or making a scoring sheet that people can access on-line. That may make up for it. The focus is on game enjoyment and not as much on winning. So, the emphasis is on-time orders, press sent, tempo, how long you last, and how many supply centers. Why? Picture two games. In one, all the players are dynamic communicators and play well. In another, it's almost a silent stalemate. Using traditional systems, the top half of the two games would advance. Using this system, more of the players in the first game will advance than in the second. RACES is based on the following. (R) on-time order submision ("R"eliability). You get 100 points to start. Each late submission, you'll be docked 10 points. If you request an absence, it's 1 point per day requested. You only count deadline days, so if you're playing M-F, you don't count weekends. This is solely based on the individual's performance, a player-level measure. (A) press sent ("A"micability). I don't count Spring 1901. This measure is the number of press divided by the number of seasons played. The highest number in the *tournament* gets 100 points and the lowest player gets 0 points. Everyone else is assigned accordingly. (C) percent successful orders ("C"apability). I take the number of un-cut, non-bounced, and non-void orders (holds don't count for or against) divided by the number of non-hold orders. Then multiply by 100. I realize that self-bounces count against you; however, this measure's intent is to measure tempo and if you're self-bouncing, you're not moving anywhere. (E) how long do you last ("E"xperience). This is a game-level metric. The first person eliminated gets zero points. The power or powers lasting until the end get 100. Evyerone else is adjusted accordingly. (S) "S"upply centers. I just couldn't get away from it. A solo is 100 points. If you draw, then 50 points are forfeited and the remaining 50 are divided among the drawn powers based on number of supply centers. The tourney is five rounds: a qualifying round (14 games); preliminaries (7 games); quarter-finals (4 games); semi-finals (2 games); and finals (1 game). The first two are based totally on RACES. The last three are based on the "S" to seed the top seats and then the other components for the remaining seats. So, what do you think? ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
