Rejoice, you buccaneers, I found the formula to allow invalid orders in NO_=
PRESS games without throwing out the whole order checking routine that many=
players have come to depend on. The answer is a new rule called SIGNAL_SUP=
PORT, which I encourage you to employ in every future NO_PRESS game (unless=
it's for utter newbies or other educational purposes).
Say you wanted to express your frustration that your game-long ally has sta=
bbed you. The common FTF mode for doing that (other than insulting the pers=
on in front of the whole room) is to write an order supporting his treacher=
ous army or fleet to the cold reaches of Switzerland. On the DPjudge such a=
n order could only be made if the NO_CHECK rule was applied. But even then =
it would only show up in the results, not on the map. And chances are that =
in your great spat of anger, you misspelled SWI also. SIGNAL_SUPPORT is abo=
ut to change all that. Here's the description:
Players may order support to any unit and any destination on the board, inc=
luding SHUTs (impassable areas defined in the map file, such as Switzerland=
on the Standard map). They will be treated as void support orders in the r=
esults and on the map. This is useful in NO_PRESS games to signal a player'=
s intention or stance towards other players. Invalid orders are marked with=
a question mark (?) in the order box after submitting them.=20
Here are some examples and their possible interpretation:=20
England: A LVP S F NTH ?=20
This could be a taunt. "I dare you to attack my home island when I have bot=
h my front and back covered."=20
France: A MAR S A VIE - ROM ?=20
This is a cry for help. "Austria, Italy is heading my way. Stab him now to =
get him off my back."=20
Austria: A VIE S A VEN - SWI ?=20
This is the Austrian reply. "Italy, I'm coming after you after I finish som=
e business here. Better run and hide!"=20
A pretty thorough description, no? Now that you caught the signal, come and=
play with it. Games signal and signal-bunch are currently forming, game fl=
are has already started. Light on starboard!
Mario.
