Newbie needs help

Hi,
I just joined up, and wondering where I can find a "Newbie zone" if 
there's such a thing.  I do have my own Diplomacy set but rather not 
have it hogging a table for months just to keep track of the game, so 
it would be great if someone can point me to a computer-based Diplomacy 
map facility.

Does anyone join public games at all?  All the ones listed are 
virtually empty.  Is my best chance of finding a game to join one of 
the private games on this mailing list?
