Hi Jacob,

welcome to the DPjudge!

You said that you've played Diplomacy before, so I assume you are
reasonably familiar with the basic rules. (Otherwise they could be
retrieved via the first link on http://www.diplom.org/Online/ )

At http://www.diplom.org/openings/openings.html#USDP you will always
find the list of current openings. You will probably want to look for
"Standard, Gunboat" which means that the game takes place on the
Standard map (there's plenty of other maps available) and that you
won't know the other players in the game until its very end
("Gunboat"). There are almost always some games of this kind available.

Before you actually JOIN the game (you've played a game on the DPjudge
before, so you know how this works) you should visit its webpage to
find out whether you like the other game parameters: "Timing" is
important because it tells you how often deadlines will occur, and
"Rules" is important because some have a heavy impact on the nature of
the game while others don't. You find an explanation of the "timing"=20
line by clicking on "timing", and an explanation for each rule by
clicking on it. (A comprehensive list of all possible rules is at
http://www.floc.net/dpjudge/?page=3DRules ) As always, the default (=3D no
extra rules, everything as per official rules by Hasbro Inc.) is a
pretty good setting to start with.

Observe also the settings regarding press as they typically have a
great impact on the nature of the game. Default is "white, private" --
any two players can communicate privately via email at any point
during the game, without anyone else interfering or intercepting their
messages.

As for starting a game, you can create a game on the DPjudge -- but
then you will be its Game Master (GM) and cannot play in it. So you=20
should ask someone else (you could ask either the mailing list, or try
someone specific, like me) if you found six friends that you would
like to play with. In that situation, a "private" game can be held,
where the players do know each other. There's nothing between Gunboat
and Private.

Most of what you could possibly need to know about the interface is
explained at http://www.floc.net/dpjudge?page=3DEmail

As for strategy, an awful lot has been written about many aspects of
standard diplomacy. A very good resource for theoretical treatises is
the Diplomatic Pouch Zine http://www.diplom.org/Zine/ . For practical
examples you can study the histories (pdf maps) and End of Game
statements (EoG) of finished games on the DPjudge website. I've
personally found that I don't have enough motivation to work through
the mass of essays (as they exist as well for chess) and rather
concentrated on exploring map variants -- because there is far less
academic wisdom about map-specific strategies known about them.

I hope this answer was of some use to you. I'm sending it to the full
mailing list because someone else might be interested in reading or
referring it eventually.

C.-F.
