I like both thin and thick french fries (the thick sometimes being called "steak fries" in America).  I sometimes eat them with ketchup (normally with a fair amount of pepper added, as major brand ketchups are too bland), sometimes barbecue sauce, other times, whatever sauce, gravy or other liquid happens to be handy on the plate.

P.S.  It is fairly easy to make a very good french fry.  To make very good onion rings, however, requires culinary artistry.  Mmmmm.  Onion rings.

P.P.S.  Renaming foods for patriotic reasons is actually an old American tradition.  In WWI, in the United States, a big push was made to rename 'sauerkraut'.  For some reason, the name 'liberty cabbage' never really took hold.
