Taking "the modern world" into account for a bit I think it's important to
remember that the majority of people will discover something new from
YouTube videos, images shared online in places like reddit/social media
etc.

It can also be people's first port of call when they start to have issues,
or see results they didn't quite expect.

It'd help FG's image/impression/reach significantly if we could encourage
more sharing of the high quality, well honed media that gets produced.
If you look for FG on such places you tend to find that it's the lower
quality stuff and people sharing development updates which aren't always in
their final, polished, form.

If people are more aware of what FlightGear can do when used to it's
potential I think that could go a long way towards resolving some of the
issues shown in this thread. It's something I've struggled with as I'm
certainly no content creator but do try to produce and share nice
screenshots on various forums etc. It's quite polarising when people will
reply with "I gave up with FG because I loaded in and it looked like it was
1998"

The more we can share what it's really capable of, and unfortunately these
day's that's primarily doing what we can to up the visual aspects, then I
think we'd be in a much better position.

The good news is all that's perfectly possible with what we've got now and,
bar a bit of work producing it, not too time intensive.

Perhaps the forums and Dev list should have a push this year of sharing
what FG can do far and wide to not only reinforce the "brand" but also to
help attract new blood interested in the same.
