I'd imagine 99% of people compiling FG on Windows using Microsoft's C/C++ compiler (MSVC) do it via the IDE Visual Studio, as opposed to using a separately installed stand-alone version of MSVC. So, the communication is easier to mention Visual Studio 2026 as opposed to MSVC v145, which is the latest MSVC version and which ships with and is updated by Visual Studio 2026 via it's update mechanism.

Visual Studio 2022 shipped with MSVC v143.

You could use visual studio to build it or use a script directly

Whenever VS gets a version bump they also bump MSVC.

I just migrated to Visual Studio 2026 Community.

Just reporting that FlightGear (2024.1) builds in VS2026 and latest MSVC as with VS2022 no problem. The NEW -> OLD workaround is still needed obviously, as that's a CMake thing. But it was a transparent move for me, with VS2022 and previous MSVC no longer installed.

Qt still only has options for VS2022 but with latest MSVC in VS2026 everything builds fine so far. I've updated the wiki with the relevant info.
