..hum. My laptop also has a 1920x1200 panel, but with ATI's
M56GL [Mobility FireGL V5200] on Intel's 945GM/PM/GMS, 943/940GML
and 945GT Express PCI Express Root Port (rev 03) and Intel's
Core2 T7200, running KDE-4.6.3-1 on xorg1:7.6+6 on radeon1:6.14.2-1
from Debian Sid+Experimental, I just add --full-screen and fly.

..running FG windowed, cuts the framerate by about half,
but FG remains flyable at 3 to 5fps, full screen is 8-20.

..are you Chris getting similar performance?
Have you tried X.org's nouveau driver?
