Which takes me to the question: Did you do interpolation on the SRTMs 
back then? I originally took the SRTMs in an uninterpolated way and - as 
was to be expected - the elevation contours were pretty angular. Which 
led to my dismissal of your "SRTMs match current maps" assumption.
