I'm not sure. I just ran the SRTM tiff through gdal_contour to produce a 
shapefile, then overlaid the result on an ordnance survey map. That gave 
me an effective 5m contour interval (since both sources had a 10m 
contour interval, but the combined result was alternating SRTM and 
ordnance survey contours).

I can't find any detail on how it actually does the conversion.
