Hello Alex, I didn't experiment myself, but there are tools inside TerraGear that can be used to map an image onto the scenery. In the archive, I found this message : http://mail.flightgear.org/pipermail/flightgear-users/2004-January/006949.html The tools source are in src/Prep/Photo. CVS : http://cvs.terragear.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs/viewcvs.cgi/source/src/Prep/Photo/Makefile.am?cvsroot=TerraGear-0.0 there is chop.pl and photo. That's all I can tell you.
