Maybe Curt could tell us how he uses other formats. It would be really easy to write a converter for something like BIL. (plain jane binary interleaved line format) The ultimate solution would be to use the gdal library for the import and then write the data out in our proprietry ascii format. Then nearly any DEM format could be used.
