Heh.  Where did you get this URL?  I'd read about hgtchop, and the
.hgt.zip files have been what I was looking for; but the docs pointed
to ftp://edcsgs9.cr.usgs.gov/pub/data/srtm/ , which is no longer
available and points to ftp://e0mss21u.ecs.nasa.gov/srtm/ , which fails
because the srtm directory is mode 700 (only the owner can get in there).
