I think the current scenery was not built with the DEM-30 eleveation model, 
but with SRTM data which is much more precise than the DEM-30. For the US you 
will get a resolution of 1 (one) arcsec instead of 30 arcsec in the DEM-30.

The fg-scenery-tutorial on www.terragear.org seems to be a little out of date.
A newer one covering SRTM data is in CVS at
