If you get .mo out from poedit, I wonder if it would be one that works with the existing freeciv installation. Of course there's always some version mismatch when the freeciv installation and the .po -file have a bit different strings, but that should not make it unusable. Especially just now the .po files in files.freeciv.org are still those of 3.0.0 (I have not refreshed them since).
