Seems to work!

I made a change to the .po file, saved it and renamed the .mo file accordingly to "freeciv-core.mo“ and put it under /Applications/freeciv.app/Contents/share/locale/de/LC_MESSAGES

Result:
The changed text was displayed in the app! (see screenshot)

I will do some further testing the next days, if spare time is available…
