Pencils down, people! That=E2=80=99s all there is, and there ain=E2=80=99t=
 no more! You
know, as a mathematician, I=E2=80=99m well aware of how dangerous it is to =
draw
conclusions from a small number of data points. And yet, it=E2=80=99s such=
 an easy
trap to fall into. When, seemingly, one result is all you hear about, it=
=E2=80=99s
not hard to assume that that result is inevitable in *all* cases, even
though the number of instances experienced has been quite small.
Sometimes, all it takes to prove that assumption wrong is the right group,
one that might have a history of looking at things a little bit differently
than others. Say, perhaps, a group like Spielfrieks.

With that none-too-subtle introduction, I am pleased to announce that the
winners of the 2019 Meeples Choice Awards are:

THE CREW

RES ARCANA
MARACAIBO

I=E2=80=99m pretty sure that, prior to the voting, most people assumed that=
 the one
game that would certainly be included in the above list was Wingspan.
After all, it was clearly very popular, had won the Kennerspiel, the DSP
award, and not only won the Golden Geeks, but also topped *six *of its
categories, pretty much every area that in any way applied. It was *the*
game of 2019 and surely the insightful folks at Spielfrieks felt the same
way. But the fact is, we=E2=80=99re *not* the same as the BGG community=E2=
=80=94not that
that=E2=80=99s good or bad, just that it=E2=80=99s so. Last year, Root jus=
t missed out in
our voting, even though it was the hot game going in, so maybe Wingspan
wasn=E2=80=99t a lead pipe cinch either.

And during the opening round, it certainly stumbled out of the gate.
Instead, the game that got off to a hot start, perhaps somewhat
surprisingly, was Res Arcana. Now this is a very much admired game, from a
very much admired designer (Tom Lehmann), and yet, it had somehow gotten
lost amidst the huge number of games that came out last year. But it
certainly seemed to have struck a chord with our group and it, and not
Wingspan, was the middleweight game that was getting the early love. In
fact, at the midway point through the opening round, it had a very large
lead. It eventually gave up that lead, but not to a title about birds that
fly, but space ships that fly. The Crew, the surprise hit of Essen, came
on like gangbusters at the end and wound up with a one vote lead over Res
Arcana, with the two of them well ahead of the rest of the field. Not to
worry, avian fans=E2=80=94Wingspan still wound up third, but only two votes=
 in
front of Maracaibo, probably the most popular gamer=E2=80=99s game from las=
t year.
We Spielfrieks do love our meaty titles, so the Pfister design was a real
threat for the finals.

And that indeed is how it played out. During the finals, it was The Crew
that got off to the big early lead. By the middle of Saturday, it had
already garnered 20 votes and had a 5 vote lead on the field. At that
point, it was pretty much assured one of the final three spots. Res Arcana
started a bit more slowly than that, but by the end of the weekend, it,
too, had reached the 20 vote mark and had clinched a spot. That left just
one opening and it was a three game battle, between Maracaibo, Wingspan,
and Barrage, the design so good that it has flourished despite a disastrous
Kickstarter campaign. It was close, but at no point was Wingspan able to
nudge ahead of the other two. Maracaibo had a slight lead after Saturday
and then slowly added to it. There weren=E2=80=99t that many votes after t=
he
weekend, so that was that. Wingspan was able to inch ahead of Barrage at
the very end, but both finished reasonably behind Maracaibo. Little Town,
one of the great stories of this year, continued its fantastic showing by
finishing sixth, with The Taverns of Tiefenthal, Paladins of the West
Kingdom, Hadara, Cartographers, PARKS, and Pax Pamir rounding out the top
10.

So congratulations go out to designers Thomas Sing, Tom Lehmann, and
Alexander Pfister. It=E2=80=99s Sing=E2=80=99s first MCA (actually, The Cr=
ew is only his
fourth design, with the 2016 dice game Kribbeln being the only other one to
make any kind of impact). Lehmann wins his third MCA; only Knizia,
Wallace, Moon, and Rosenberg have more. And it=E2=80=99s Meeples Choice Aw=
ard #2
for Herr Pfister. Finally, congratulations as well to the publishers:
Kosmos, Sand Castle Games, and Game=E2=80=99s Up. The smaller publishers a=
re
showing that they can produce games with the same quality as the big guys,
which is terrific news for us all.

I=E2=80=99ve listed the results for the final round at the end of this note=
.. The
games are shown in the order of the votes they received during the final
election, with the number of votes received during the first round shown in
parentheses. If you=E2=80=99ll go to meepleschoice.win and click on the =
=E2=80=9CSee
Results=E2=80=9D button, you=E2=80=99ll be able to see the results of both =
rounds of voting
this year. If you click on a specific election, you can see all the
results on one page. If you click on a game title for a particular
election, you can see all the public votes for that game, so you can check
out how your buddies voted.

So thanks to everyone who participated in the election. 80 people voted
during the final round, with 85 voting during the first round, which is
great participation. Every game received at least one vote, which is
always nice, and all but one (L.L.A.M.A.) got at least 3 votes. As always,
I thoroughly enjoyed conducting the voting and look forward to doing it
again next year. Hopefully, at that point, we=E2=80=99ll be able to say, =
=E2=80=9CRemember
when you were afraid of strangers who *didn=E2=80=99t* wear a mask, rather =
than the
ones who do?=E2=80=9D, and have it apply safely to the past!

Here are the final results of the 2019 MCA=E2=80=99s. They differ slightly=
 from
what the app is reporting, because the actual totals include the votes from
someone who didn=E2=80=99t use our voting app.
