Thanks, Jacob. I do have fun writing these the notices up. :-)
Here are my own thoughts on the results.
* Like many other folks, I drank the Wingspan Kool-ade. I definitely
thought it would be one of our three winners, even though the game doesn't
do anything for me. But once again, y'all pleasantly surprised me.
* I figured Maracaibo, as the top-rated Euro gamer's game of the year,
would also grab one of the spots. I wasn't sure about the third game;
maybe Paladins of the West Kingdom.
* Both The Crew and Res Arcana surprised me, although maybe they shouldn't
have. After all, folks got very excited about The Crew after Essen. And
Res Arcana has always been popular. They just weren't the games I thought
of when I was speculating how this would play out.
* My favorite game from last year is Barrage. I figured it would do well
enough, but not really have a chance to win. It was nice to see it
actually challenge for the third spot, but a fifth place finish is about
what I had in mind.
* I haven't played Pax Pamir. The only Pax game I've played is Porfiriana
and it's NOT my kind of game. But I understand that the second edition of
Pamir has tamed the chaos down quite a bit, so it's one I'd give a try, if
the opportunity arises.
* I knew of Little Town and a lot of my friends are big fans of Japanese
games. Still, the support for what was essentially a write-in candidate
both surprised and delighted me.
* All three of the winning games were in my top 10. Maracaibo got one of
my three final votes and I'd love to play both The Crew and Res Arcana more
often. In fact, I'm hoping to get some online plays of The Crew in very
shortly.
* Once again, three really good games chosen by the group. I love how we
shine the spotlight on games that are popular, but hadn't necessarily been
award winning. Well, these are games that deserve that spotlight and we
gave it to them!
