But it certainly seemed to= have struck a chord with our group and it, and not Wingspan, was the middl= eweight game that was getting the early love. In fact, at the midway point= through the opening round, it had a very large lead. It eventually gave u= p that lead, but not to a title about birds that fly, but space ships that = fly. The Crew, the surprise hit of Essen, came on like gangbusters at the = end and wound up with a one vote lead over Res Arcana, with the two of them= well ahead of the rest of the field. Not to worry, avian fans=E2=80=94Win= gspan still wound up third, but only two votes in front of Maracaibo, proba= bly the most popular gamer=E2=80=99s game from last year. We Spielfrieks d= o love our meaty titles, so the Pfister design was a real threat for the fi= nals. >>=20=20 >> And that indeed is how it played out. During the finals, it was The Cre= w that got off to the big early lead. By the middle of Saturday, it had al= ready garnered 20 votes and had a 5 vote lead on the field. At that point,= it was pretty much assured one of the final three spots. Res Arcana start= ed a bit more slowly than that, but by the end of the weekend, it, too, had= reached the 20 vote mark and had clinched a spot. That left just one open= ing and it was a three game battle, between Maracaibo, Wingspan, and Barrag= e, the design so good that it has flourished despite a disastrous Kickstart= er campaign. It was close, but at no point was Wingspan able to nudge ahea= d of the other two. Maracaibo had a slight lead after Saturday and then sl= owly added to it. There weren=E2=80=99t that many votes after the weekend,= so that was that. Wingspan was able to inch ahead of Barrage at the very = end, but both finished reasonably behind Maracaibo. Little Town, one of th= e great stories of this year, continued its fantastic showing by finishing = sixth, with The Taverns of Tiefenthal, Paladins of the West Kingdom, Hadara= , Cartographers, PARKS, and Pax Pamir rounding out the top 10. >>=20=20 >> So congratulations go out to designers Thomas Sing, Tom Lehmann, and Ale= xander Pfister.
