Larry, now I understand what you meant by your count of 6. The Wingspan
sweep was part of what motivated me to vote for the first time. I wanted to
help make sure something else at least had a fighting chance. I wouldn't
say I agree with Jeremy Howard in the Dice Tower video, but I was certainly
happy to see him voice his opinion. I strongly disagree with him about
Friedmann, Terraforming Mars, and Underwater Cities, but still was glad he
didn't hold back and explained why.
Jacob, yes voting was fun. I'm glad I did it. I felt the same way the one
time I had a chance to vote for the Hugos. In that case, the nominees were
known for long enough beforehand that I had had the time to read all of the
nominated novels and all but one of the nominated short stories, at least.
I think I had seen most if not all of the nominated movies as well. There,
as here, I felt I shouldn't vote in any category where I had no real
knowledge of a majority of the nominees, because that, I feel, often leads
to winners of lower quality that happened to have more marketing support.
Case in point, in my opinion, was that American Gods, by Neil Gaiman, won
the Hugo the year I voted. It was a good book, but I think at least two of
the lesser known authors had better novels that year. Just my opinion.
Anyway, I can't believe I overlooked Letter Jam. A good friend and one time
co-worker at my FLGS actually got a full time job here in the states
working for CGE. He brought first prototype editions, and then early print
run editions of that by the store and I played quite a few times. It is
also a very good game and if this vote had had a separate category for
family and/or party games, it might well have gotten one of my votes had I
voted in the finals. I'm pretty sure I did nominate it.
