Wow, sorry for the non-reply. I appreciate your response. I have ended up
using version 1.3.1 instead of 1.3.3. This is to be compatible with the
simulated racing car championship codebase, and this is working well for
me. Someone else on the net has posted a Python client for this, so I'm now
up and running (although not up with the latest core codebase).

I may try to get 1.3.3 running and I'll use your advice at that point, but
right now I'm happy :)
