Installation help

Is there a way to install the game in my home folder, instead of root?
My drive's pretty small, / has only about 1Gb left, and I can't really
start removing anything there. Resizing the partitions would be a huge
mess, and with possible data loss, reinstalling and the whole shebang,
not an attractive option. My /home (on a different partition) has enough
space for the game, so can I change the install path somewhere? I tried
reading the makefile and readme, but unfortunately, it's all gibberish
to me.
