Since the SASL/SMTP-AUTH draft (draft-myers-smtp-auth-05.txt) also deals with encryption for SMTP, it might be a good idea to coordinate reply codes with it and come up with a generic "Secure channel required" reply code. That draft doesn't yet deal with the issue of what to do in response to SMTP commands if the server requires security but the client hasn't initiated it. I've suggested that something similar to what you've suggested be included in the draft and that the reply codes be coordinated with the STARTTLS code. -- jeff > -----Original Message----- > From: Paul E.
