Welcome all,

The volume of reports being received by abuse desks keeps increasing -
tens of thousands a day at some ISPs. At the same time, many of these
reports are unclear, hard to triage and respond to efficiently and,
in many cases, don't provide enough information to allow an issue
to be handled.

Anything that will allow them to be handled more efficiently and
effectively would be a good thing, and that's the broad goal of
this ASRG subgroup.

As part of the ASRG our bailiwick is primarily reports about spam, but
they're only one type of report an abuse desk receives so we should bear
that in mind while discussing possibilities.

Users of abuse reports include:

  o  Bandwidth provider abuse desks
  o  Hosting and end-user ISP abuse desks, both large and small
  o  ESP (email service provider) abuse desks
  o  Security incident response teams
  o  ISP and corporate spam filter operators
  o  Legal staff at ISPs/ESPs justifying client terminations
  o  Legal staff pursuing legal action against abusers
  o  Law enforcement (civil, eg DAs, and criminal)
  o  Tool developers for all the above

They use abuse reports in different ways, so have somewhat different
needs. Many of these different types of user are represented in this
subgroup, so hopefully can expand on just how they use abuse reports,
and so what information from them is most useful.

As a research group ASRG focuses on research around an issue and
documentation of results (including description of needs, BCPs and
proposed solutions) rather than detailed protocol development.
