Hello everyone. I believe I fit into categories 1, 2, and (hopefully) 5:
1. I'm currently writing a content filtering system based on a collection of proprietary techniques. I have the techniques working in "bench" form and am currently writing the "other 90%" portion to change it into something useable by a non-programmer.
2. I've written three MUA's for environments somewhat different than what is currently in common use on the net. (UUCP was the primary transfer mechinism in two of the three systems.)
5. I taught myself how to program back in the early 1970's. I've been dabbling in various techniques to filter/classify email since I received my first undesired email message back in the early 1980's. I first tried simple word/phrase rules and then branched into a wide range of quasi-statistical methods (including independantly discovering (and then discarding) what's currently called "Bayesian filtering" back in the mid-1980's).
In short, I'm a software designer/engineer, wana-be entrepreneur, with inventor tendencies... <grin>
