These could be rephrased as "upstream," downstream," and "P2P."  I guess 
I just have some tiny intuitive niggle that says it's better not to 
constrain our thinking about the sender/receiver to email widgets, even 
if that's the primary venue.

(And I agree with your assessment that we need more input/expertise from 
folks on the "upstream" side of things.)
