My retort to "replace SMTP" is always why not just add some new code
like NOTS (switch to not smtp) to SMTP and proceed from there with
your new-fangled protocol.

Add support to the handful of major mailers, in some cases you can do
that with an external program (e.g., milter), you don't even have to
hack the code base, and off you go.

So, that's not the obstacle.
