They don't think "I used to know John Levine at high school, and I want to email him, so, let's guess his email address is johnl@...", they have seen your email address somewhere - either you've told them, or they've seen it on a website, or newsletter, or something. The 'introduction problem' applies to current email as well... If you don't know someone's email address, you can't email them.
