As a historical note, I argued against msgno during the standardization phase, but I lost. So, you're not the only one who finds it a bit confusing. :) (Although, it does leave the door open for a BEEP extention where you could negotiate for an asynchronous channel, which would relax the requirement that messages are replied to in the same order as they are received. That might be a better match for some protocols.)
