We can also go the other way with gap, burst-gap and stream-gap. I would 
like to steer away from OSI model references (like RFC1242 and RFC2544 
managed). The model is as general as specifying the generated data plane 
as octets part of frames and octets part of gaps. You could implement it 
for L1 if for whatever reason you would want to have control over the 
actual preamble data (where the minimum gap would be 12 or even less) , 
as L2 (the case of the reference / running code and the Ethernet 
relevant notes in the draft) where you have the Ethernet frame specific 
fields including FCS, and even for L3 where your minimum gap would 
include MAC addresses and FCS filelds.
