As the emergence of service-oriented architecture provides a major boost=20
for e-commerce agility, the number of available Web services is rapidly=20
increasing. However, when there are a large number of Web services=20
available and no single Web service satisfies the given request, one has=20
to ?compose? multiple Web services to fulfill the goal. This article=20
presents an AI planning-based Web service composition algorithm named Web=20
Services Planner (WSPR). The efficiency and effectiveness of WSPR is=20
evaluated using two publicly available test sets=ADEEE05 and ICEBE05. In=20
addition to analyzing the two test sets, the authors also suggest several=20
improvements for benchmarking Web service composition.

One main characteristic of virtual enterprises are short-term=20
collaborations between business partners to provide efficient and=20
individualized services to customers. This article describes the MOVE=20
project, which targets a methodology and software framework to support=20
such flexible collaborations based on process oriented design and=20
communication by Web services. MOVE?s framework supports the graphical=20
design and verification of business processes, the execution and=20
supervision of processes in transaction-oriented environments, and the=20
dynamic composition and optimization of processes. The composition of=20
processes from Web services is implemented with methods from AI-planning.=20
The authors apply answer set programming (ASP) and map Web service=20
descriptions and customer requests into the input language of the ASP=20
software DLV. The conclusion demonstrates the performance of the program=20
provides implementation details, and shares thoughtful insights.

In current service-oriented applications, typically each individual Web=20
service cannot satisfy users? requests for Web services, but the=20
functionalities of several Web services may be integrated to accomplish=20
the requested task. The article introduces BITS, a Web service composition =

system. BITS is implemented based on a binary tree which is used to=20
organize Web services. In this system, some search strategies and=20
optimization techniques are developed for efficient service discovery and=20
service composition. Extensive experiments are conducted for performance=20
study, and the results show the efficiency and effectiveness of the=20
methods adopted in BITS.

Service composition is a major challenge in an open environment populated=20
by large numbers of heterogeneous services. In such a setting, the=20
efficient interaction of directory-based service discovery with service=20
composition engines is crucial. This article presents a Java-based=20
directory that offers special functionality enabling effective service=20
composition. In order to optimize the interaction of the directory with=20
different service composition algorithms exploiting application-specific=20
heuristics, the directory supports user-defined selection and ranking=20
functions written in a declarative query language. Inside the directory=20
queries are transformed and compiled to JVM bytecode which is dynamically=20
linked into the directory. The compiled query enables a best-first search=20
of matching directory entries, efficiently pruning the search space.

Next-generation applications based on Web services impose additional=20
requirements on the use of coordination protocols with various=20
optimizations, such as the two-phase commit protocol (2PC). This article=20
analyzes the well-known 2PC optimizations ?presumed commit? and ?presumed=20
abort,? and presents an improved 2PC that is suitable for=20
Web-service-based applications. More specifically, the protocol allows=20
every individual service provider to dynamically choose the most=20
appropriate presumption for any distributed transaction. This new=20
capability is especially useful when a composite Web service is=20
integrating component services that make different presumptions in their=20
commit protocols. The protocol does not introduce extra overhead to the=20
previous 2PC variants in terms of number of messages and log records, and=20
it is easy to understand and realize. The simulation shows that the choice =

of appropriate presumption has significant influence on system=20
performance, and that in some heterogeneous settings, combining different=20
presumptions in individual transactions outperforms adopting only one=20
single presumption.
