Of course we do, most notably RFC 8020. I think we can excuse the
authors' inability to peer into the future.

If you gratuitously turn NXDOMAIN into NODATA you're going to break a
lot of software. I am astonished everyone here isn't already aware of
that.

That is probably the least bad resolution to this self-inflicted injury.
