Dear DNSOP,

We would like to announce a new Internet-Draft:

draft-duan-dnsop-work-amplification-00
DNS Work Amplification: Problem Statement, Terminology, and Taxonomy

https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-duan-dnsop-work-amplification/

This document introduces a systematic framework for understanding DNS work amplification. It defines the terminology, threat model, and taxonomy needed to reason about situations in which a client query can trigger disproportionate work by recursive resolvers. The goal is to provide a common vocabulary and classification framework that can facilitate discussion of existing vulnerabilities, protocol ambiguities, and future protocol and operational improvements.

We would greatly appreciate feedback from the working group, particularly on the proposed terminology, taxonomy, and whether the document captures the relevant classes of work amplification mechanisms comprehensively and accurately.

We are also preparing a companion BCP draft that builds on this taxonomy and provides operational and protocol guidance for bounding resolver work.

We look forward to your comments and suggestions.

Best regards,

Liwen Xu
on behalf of the authors
