Exactly, so why break existing standards which has the future potential
of causing such problems?

To date I know of 2 cases where wild cards are useful, although they are
really the same case just on different scales. Firstly where a large
Tier 1 carrier has a large block of numbers and delegates these numbers
out to a smaller carrier, and the smaller carrier delegates single
numbers out to end users. In both cases both carriers have wild card
records in a zone and so does the end user and the most specific record
is returned.

I realise the above cases can be handled with NS records at each
successive level and should still work with your draft, but a number of
countries that have evaluated or are evaluating e164.arpa are looking at
the option of a single zone for faster lookups.

As I keep saying I see how this is so useful for a lot of reasons, I
just don't see any benefit in doing it via DNS verses some other
protocol or method.
