FWIW, Innosoft's implementation, which I worked on, also works via SMTP
and doesn't involve POP3. I know of several others that work via SMTP
as well.

And speaking purely as a participant and not as an AD, I've always considered
POP3-based implementations to be flawed in any number of ways, including but
not limited to the acknowledgements problem. In the past I have suggested that
the relevant FAX specifications ban them outright.
