There are two issues here: 1) We have all agreed that it is desirable to be able to pass meta-data between FEs. This is the Fi interface. 2) We can build solutions with FEs from different vendors without passing meta-data. We do not get teh degree of scaling we would like, but it does still work. Assertions that it does not work will prevent folks from utilizing the protocol, and therefore prevent us from ever getting to work on Fi. (I am very confident that doing this without passing meta-data around is useful because I have over the years built several sets of solutions that were distributed routers without meta data passing.) As a background, this issue of inter-FE communication within an NE does not depend upon nor is it driven by the integration of legacy routers. It is desirable in and of itself. Once it is done, the legacy router integration techniques will be able to make use of it, likely with no further change to the protocol mechanisms. Yours, Joel M.
