Hi! This is Charles Douglas Wehner. I sent a request for comments regarding the extension of the "CONTENT-DISPOSITION" MIME header by "DOWNLOAD". There were cases of previous correspondents on the Internet requesting a download facility, but nothing came of them. I quoted some of these. The concept is to DISABLE the automation. That is to say, if "DOWNLOAD" is specified, control is handed over to the computer user. For example, even an "INDEX.HTM" that could be displayed will not be. The "DOWNLOAD" instruction tells the browser that it is permitted ONLY to download, and the DISPOSITION becomes a decision by the user. It could be extended by "DOWNLOAD/TEXT/HTM" or whatever, by which the browser makes SUGGESTIONS such as OFFERING the text/html director y as an OPTION. However, "DOWNLOAD" files will NEVER be opened automatically. I the! n began to receive a torrent of viruses from hethmon.com and others. They clearly were marked "FTP-WG", suggesting that "TROJANS" had picked up the addresses and dispatched such viruses as "TOOBIG" as if they originated from you. I had to activate the virus-trapping software, and contact with you was lost. I have not given up asking the FTP-Work-Group to introduce a DOWNLOAD header. Such a header is essential on those servers that do not permit FTP. I have simply been unable to maintain contact.
