Factually speaking it worked out well; he was right. MS-DOS had various 
constraints, e.g. singletasking, lack of memory protection and the 640k 
limit. The question was whether to raise that limit; 896k would have been 
possible at a cost of some compatibility breaks. Bill said, spread over 
several remarks, "no, let's keep 640k, people are going to upgrade for 
other reasons, not because of the 640k" and in hindsight I think he was 
clearly right.

There's a lesson in that quotation for RFC authors: People are going to 
twist your words around and make you have said stupid things, so watch what 
you write.
