The situation seems analogous to complaining about the size of an Oldsmobile Delta 88, but then selecting the Delta 88 over a Chevy Suburban when those are the only two options available. No, instead of irony, I see a bit of a cosmic rebuke: a protocol historically criticised for being too large was selected by consensus over XML for space efficiency reasons.
