Yes, you have a point. I used really brief American English when I said it:

"...but I think there might be some room when the "%" (terrible choice)
appears between two square brackets."

It is still an ugly choice. I'm sorry I didn't do a better job on this
sentence. It is difficult to discuss grammar in a concise and unambiguous
way.
