I've just had an extensive conversation with out area directors on the future of
this WG.
The concensus reached between us is that the default disposition of this WG
is that it will get shut down, unless there is a strong reason not to.
Such reason would consist of:
o strong indication that there will be vendor implementation of this if it
becomes a standard, with interim implementations along the way
o strong indication (and this is perhaps more important) that network operators
would actually deploy it.
o firm committments by WG members to actually do the work of moving both our
existing document, and a potential active/intention-driven itrace document
forward. That would include submitting text revisions to the existing document,
participating in WG discussions and meetings, etc.
o strong indication that this technology continues to be forensically useful,
in the face of increasing adoption of ingress/egress filtering, and the
use of so-called diffuse DDOS attack scenarios.
If, in 30 days, there is no strong indication that this WG should continue, then
the existing document will be cleaned up so that it is implementable, and published
as an EXPERIMENTAL RFC.
If, however, there is *strong* indication for continuation of the WG, then we will
continue to work on the existing document, and expand the charter to include
the intention-driven/active itrace functionality.
