Barbara, I was involved in some of this effort, so I remember :-) Perhaps we were too early then, but the time has come now. >From my vantage point, e-commerce is a major driver. The need for a widely-deployed and interoperable PKI drives the Directory. In addition, network service management requires a Directory and the dynamics of the corporate world with mergers, acquisitions and spin-offs place requirements on the DN. It is no longer realistic to simply grab your Directory Name out of thin air. It must be coordinated on a global basis to ensure uniqueness. I think the original kick-off of this discussion was a suggested effort to create some sort of coordination of individual directories which in itself imposes a requirement for a globally coordinated namespace.
