1 I agree with Stig that EXCLUDE mode is kept for ASM, to say precisely, be
kept for (*,G)join on the host side.
That is expressed by EXCLUDE<NULL> in the IGMPv3. And there is another
alternative to represent the (*.G)join as an
extension for INCLUDE mode, i.g., INCLUDE<ALL>. Then it is possible that
EXCLUDE mode not supported by IGMP3 host.
But for compatibility reason, EXCLUDE <NULL> is prefered.
2 On the router part, there is also a filter mode definition in igmpv3 to
optimize the state description within the router.
Without the EXCLUDE (S, G) report, there is little need to maintain
router-filter-mode. The judgement is easier to take
by the router and no complex mode-switching is required.
3 As Marshall mentioned, if lite version is a feasible choice, I agree that
new implemention should not introduce interoperation problem.
