Side Meeting notes - Thursday 9th November @18.00 Local

Apologies for the late sending due to illness…

Thank you to those (about 40 in the room, over 30 on-line) who attended the Side Meeting on Thursday 9th November at 18.00 to discuss whether the IETF could/should consider alternate architectures for future mobile networks.

There were three brief presentations:


  1.  David Lake – ‘IMS – some thoughts’
  2.  Bob Moskowtiz ‘Efficient Air to Ground Communications’
  3.  Toerless Eckert – no slides, but a general discussion on where we are with mobile devices.

There was then an open discussion on how the IETF or a related group study future mobile solutions.

To summarise the discussion, there does seem to be an interest in trying to put a problem statement together in time for the next IETF.  It was also acknowledged that some of the areas discussed go beyond the engineering focus of an IETF WG and therefore finding a ‘home’ for such work could be difficult.

If you are interested in joining a group to take a ‘first pass’ at defining a scope I’d be grateful if you could email me directly.  Given that we are so close to the end of 2022, I will be looking to convene a meeting in New Year.
