We have seen internet standard data model be extended to report names from other data models -- case in point IF-MIB rfc 2863 section 3.1.5 on ifName. In other cases what I have done for vendors is to update their enterprise mib modules DESCRIPTIONS, to show how to poll for state using whatever the vendor would prefer operators to use.
