We clearly don't want to make POP3 into IMAP4 for many many reasons :-)

One thing Chris Newman and myself were discussing a bit was a profile of 
IMAP that just supported the features needed to do off-line mode in IMAP. 
The idea is that these servers would address the problems ISP's have with 
deploying full IMAP (performance and resource issues, and complexity for 
set up, the end user and customer support).

Then we could create a pop extension that means "don't use POP, offline 
IMAP supported at port XXX" and make the transition seamless for the user.
