Obsolete? No. Stable, mature, and in no need of tinkering with? Yes. 

I find listening to the modem training nostalgic (teenage years running BBS systems, not to mention building access servers at IBM and Cisco). I was just guessing others do here as well. This list is not representative of the entire world of Internet users. 

Last time I ran into this same sound in real life was just this summer, using an ATM machine at a gas station in Wisconsin. So, yes, of course all this stuff is still in use, and not just outside the US/Euro-zone. Didn't mean to suggest otherwise.

So, let's chill, and if we do have a PPP get-together and we can both be there, I'll happily buy you the first round ;-)
